This module is both a practical language module, enabling students to develop their written (and to a certain extent, oral, skills in French), and an analytical module introducing students to methods of analysis drawing on theories of Linguistics, Stylistics and Discourse Analysis. The module specialises in the Discourse of the Press in France, looking at both daily newspapers and, to a lesser extent, magazines and thus considers cultural issues as relayed through the language of the press. Students will be introduced to the ideological spectrum of French dailies as well as to the varied genres of articles found in newspapers (and magazines). They will develop a method of analysis enabling them to approach the main language and discourse features of individual texts and practise writing such analyses in the target language.
The module also seeks to enhance communicative and presentation skills as well as transferable skills, demonstrated in the delivery of unassessed group work oral presentations.
