Module description

The module will focus on the literature of the so-called German 'inner emigration' during the 'Third Reich'. There will be introductory sessions on the political and social background of the period, cultural policy between 1933 and 1945, and the problems faced by oppositional writers during this period. A particular focus will be the problematic concept of 'inner emigration' as this has been reflected in the critical literature since 1945. These issues will be exemplified early in the course in a case study which illustrates techniques of close reading appropriate to this kind of writing. In subsequent weeks attention will be paid to a range of individual authors, their biographies and their works, drawing on relevant secondary literature. These will include published and unpublished texts produced during the period. Concluding sessions will draw together the strands of the course and re-examine and evaluate the concept of 'inner emigration' in the light of the authors and works studied on the module.
