This course will explore the literature of the so-called German “inner emigration” during the period 1933–1945. Introductory sessions will be devoted to the political and social background, cultural policy in Nazi Germany, the problems faced by oppositional writers, and techniques of close reading appropriate to this kind of writing. Students will then study in detail a selection of representative works, including both published and unpublished texts.
