To what extent should our understanding of the mind be informed by the data gathered in psychological research? The course aims at offering an answer to this question by examining the interplay between philosophical theories of the mind and psychological data on human rationality. We shall read about psychological experiments on human reasoning and assess the traditional claim that humans are rational animals by exploring the difference between intelligence and rationality, the limitations in our reasoning capacities, the interplay between the cognitive and the affective, and the relationship between rationality and sanity.
