This module will explore the philosophical issues in contemporary evolutionary biology. The module will introduce students to the basics of evolutionary theory. This module will address at least some of the following topics: the dispute between Darwinian and creationist explanations of organic life; the controversy concerning the levels of evolutionary selection; the debates concerning how we should understand adaptive 'fitness'; how we can identify species; the role of evolutionary explanations in mainstream philosophical debates, such as free will and moral psychology.
