The course examines the general position of women in Islam. It deals with their legal and social status by analysing the institutions of education, marriage, inheritance, divorce and family life, as well as their political position. Special attention will be given to the different interpretations (conservatives, modernists) concerning their role in private and public life. The views of prominent feminist scholars will also be highlighted. Further, comparison of practices and customs which affect the position of women in various Muslim countries will be examined.
