Module description
This module aims to introduce students to the nature of the Internet and associated technologies, in terms of technology, culture and social function. It will aim to provide students with an awareness of the use of the Internet as a virtual social environment, focussing on the nature and place of religion. Theoretical issues concerning research methodology, as it applies to the study of religion in cyber contexts, will be covered. Students will be given an opportunity to focus on areas of specific interest and case studies as well as particular religious traditions, such as Islam, Christianity, Judaism, alternative spiritualities and New Religious Movements that have arisen specifically with virtual contexts.
