Module description
This module focusses both on building the business and professional skills that university Arts graduates will need for career success in the contemporary world and on developing the research skills that they will require for academic success in their undergraduate and any potential future postgraduate studies. The first part of the module will focus on professional and transferable skills, helping students to recognise their personal strengths and weaknesses through personality analysis and skills evaluations and to develop key abilities such as group leadership, public speaking and presentation skills; whereas the second half of the module will seek to develop research skills such as identifying a research topic, presenting, developing and structuring an extended argument, interviewing techniques, etc., and provide an introduction to placement- and fieldwork-based research and the ethical and professional issues this may involve.
Teaching and learning methods
The module will be delivered principally through interactive lectures, which will provide a broad range of information and ideas and also afford students the opportunity of exploring aspects of this material in more detail through group discussion and interaction. WebCT will be used to support these teaching and learning activities where appropriate. This module will, as far as possible, adhere to the chief principles of the University’s current Learning and Teaching strategy.
