This module explores our understandings of the dynamics of urban and regional economies, in particular by exploring the recent growth of the ‘so-called’ knowledge and creative economies. In this context, it examines the interaction of economic and state systems at different spatial scales – global, regional, national, sub-national – with a view to understanding the reciprocal influence between these and the implications with regard to local and regional economic development and planning. It also examines certain key concepts that are important in our current efforts to account for spatial economic change such as clusters, quarters, innovation, knowledge, creativity, goods and services, sectors and technologies, and capitalism.
