This module will examine a range of music spanning the length of the 20th century through the contribution of prominent figures such as Satie, Debussy, Stravinsky, Schönberg, Webern, Berg, Messiaen, Boulez, Stockhausen, Xennakis, Berio and Ligeti. It will examine the distinct movements and styles of composition with in the 20th Century including Impressionism, early Modernism, Neo-Classicism, Serialism and Total Serialism. The module will examine the relationship between music and other art forms such as Ballet, Theatre, and the Visual Arts. Emphasis will be placed on the understanding of new techniques and ideas developed by European composers including Dodecaphonic composition, serialism, total serialism, polytonality, extended instrumental technique, polyrhythm and computer music.
