Module description

The module will introduce students to key approaches in the education of people with ASD and will critically evaluate these. It will examine the importance of partnership with parents and families and will explore the meaning of multidisciplinary/collaborative practice. Students will be encouraged to look at how they can create conditions that enable people with ASD to predict their world with a degree of confidence. This includes ways of approaching challenging behaviour. Students will also be presented with practical approaches to challenging behaviour. Current observation, assessment and recording techniques will be described. Students will be introduced to the skills involved in developing and implementing effective teaching and care programmes including the development of behaviour management programmes.

Unit 1 will introduce students to the key approaches in the care and lifelong learning of people with ASD. Unit 2 will cover the notion of working in partnership with parents, collaborative and multidisciplinary practice. Unit 3 will encourage students to develop Individual Programme Plans/Individual Education Plans for the person with whom they work. They will be taught the skills of careful observation, assessment and recording.
