Module description

The module focuses on the application of existing teaching strategies and the development of new approaches to meet the specific needs of learners with visual impairment (including those with multiple needs). This module aims to enable participants to identify and meet the learning needs of adults with visual impairment by:

  • Identifying the range of barriers to learning and participation experienced by learners and devising appropriate strategies to reduce these barriers
  • evaluating existing assessment criteria to meet learning needs and styles
  • Adapting and evaluating their own teaching strategies to promote full curricular access
  • Responding to the needs of learners within the context of their current teaching
  • Analysing and evaluating their own practice with reference to the relevant recommended National Standards for Learners with Visual Impairment in Further Education

This module includes a negotiated teaching practicum in provision where young people and adults with visual impairment are educated. The module will be assessed by means of a professional development portfolio comprising evidence that participants have met all the relevant National Standards including, competence in grade 2 British Braille to an agreed level, as well as a critical analysis of their teaching practicum in which they will have demonstrated effective intervention to a visiting assessor appointed by the University.
