Module description

The module enables candidates working towards reaccreditation as an Approved Mental Health Professional to submit work for assessment, demonstrating that they have met the requirements of the GSCC's Higher Specialist award (which has only been established since their initial qualification) concerning competing models of explanation of the origins of mental distress and how it should be dealt with.
Syllabus

  • The conceptualisation of mental health : consideration of `medical' (both psychiatric and holistic) and `social' models of mental health (e.g. labelling theory and stress-response theories).
  • The application of the medical diagnostic process to the experience of severe psychological distress.
  • The application of medical and other treatments to the experience of severe psychological distress.
  • User perspectives on the nature of severe psychological distress. Service user preferences for services - the importance of social provision. Involving service users in decisions about their own futures.
