Module description
This module examines modern political theory from the late eighteenth century: Hume, Kant, Burke, Hegel, Bentham, James Mill, Tocqueville. The second part takes the exploration of themes through the nineteenth century: J S Mill, Marx and Nietzsche.

These courses are taught by a combination of lectures, classes and directed reading.

Spring term only 10 credit unit – 3,000 word assessed essay
Whole Year 20 credit unit – 3,000 word summative essay (50%) plus 3 hour examination (50%)
