The module provides an introduction to a number of important characterisation techniques of relevance to inorganic, organ metallic and organic compounds. The techniques covered include Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Multi-Nuclear NMR Spectroscopy and powder X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) as tools for the determination of structure. Emphasis is placed on the use of these techniques for the solution of structural problems both as individual techniques and when combined in an integrated approach. The underlying theory is kept to the minimum required (this aspect is developed in other modules). Application of the various techniques developed, and practice at integrated problem solving, is reinforced through completion of a series of worksheets [problem-sheets] at the scheduled workshop sessions.
