Module description
This module aims to help students understand how the basic principles of fluid mechanics and hydraulics are applied to practical design problems involving the flow of water in pipes, rivers and drainage systems. The module gives an introduction to the hydrological cycle and to the UK water supply industry & the Environment Agency. The module then covers the basic theory on pipe flow and open channel flow, including the analysis of gradually and rapidly varying flows. An introduction is given to pumps and their performance curves. The theoretical principles behind elements of the water supply and environmental management industries are related to current practice through examples included in tutorials.
