(1) Genesis, distribution and engineering behaviour of problematical soils - introduction. (2) Swell/ Shrink soils (Engineering behaviour and treatment/mitigation or problematical behaviour). (3) Collapsible soils (Engineering behaviour and treatment/mitigation or problematical behaviour). (4) Contaminated/Derelict ground (Engineering behaviour and treatment/mitigation or problematical behaviour). (5) Other problematic soils (including: Glacial and periglacial, dispersive soils) (Engineering behaviour and treatment/mitigation or problematical behaviour). Tutorial will be a problem based class. Underground Construction (Dr. Dexter Hunt 5 lectures and 2 Tutorials) (1) Tunnels (design and construction) - introduction. (2) Tunnels (soft and hard ground). (3) Stability of tunnels and tunnel faces. (4) Movements in the ground associated with tunnels. (5) Trenchless vs. trench construction. Tutorial work will expand on the area covered during the 5 lectures above.
