Module description

The module combines the study of numerical and analytical methods for the analysis of elastic systems with practical applications of computer analysis. Matrix displacement method is used for the analysis of skeletal structures (bar, beam and 2-d frame). Practical aspects of computer modelling of structural problems are introduced and modelling skills are developed through use of FEA software.

Matrix and Finite Element analysis of structural systems: matrix displacement method, finite element analysis.

Computer applications - modelling of structural problems using commercially available FEM software package, validation of models and verification of computer output.

Structural system. skeletal structures (pinned frame, rigid frame, stepped bar). Statically determinate/indeterminate structures, redundant force/support, flexural stiffness, pinned support, fixed support and spring support. Point load, distributed load.
