Module description

The module aims introduce students to the basic concepts, principles, and laws relating to statics and dynamics, with reference to the application of mechanics and materials in sports.

Topics covered will include:

Basic Definitions - Scalar and Vector Quantities; Types of Vector; Types of Force

Statics - Newton's Laws of Motion; Mechanical friction; Moment of a force about a point; Free Body Diagrams; Coplanar Equilbrium; Forces and moments

Dynamics - Uniformly accelerated linear motion; Trajectories of projectiles; Work, power, energy, and conservation of energy; Linear momentum, linear impulse, and conservation of linear momentum
Materials Behaviour - Stress; Strain; Elastic / Non-Elastic Behaviour; Elastic Strain Energy; Young Modulus
