The aim of the module is to enhance your knowledge of the principles of mechanics and some essential mathematics and show how they can be used to solve problems.
Vectors (including dot product), kinematics – displacement, velocity and acceleration.
Newton’s laws of motion- momentum and force (including friction).
Work, power, kinetic and potential energy.
Centre of mass
Motion in a circle – kinematics, centripetal force, torque (including cross product of vectors), moment of inertia.
Statics - conditions for equilibrium.
Mechanics of materials – stress, strain, elastic moduli, strain energy, torsion of shafts, bending of beams.
All concepts will be illustrated by a range of engineering examples.
