Students are introduced to the elements of communication systems. Digital coding methods and the sampling and reconstruction of continuous signals are described. The principles of protocols for computing networks are summarised. The basic concepts and calculations of information theory are introduced. Two case studies are considered: a digital mobile phone network, and the Internet.
