The University is commited to producing global citizens and providing students with as many opportunities as possible to internationalise their degree. Each year over 350 undergraduate students complete a year abroad as part of their degree programme and benefit tremendously from the increased confidence and different academic perspective that this provides.
You are eligible for a period of study abroad where this is permitted as part of your University degree programme, and you meet the criteria set out by your department. A list of programmes that include a year abroad can be downloaded in the related links on this page.
Erasmus
Erasmus (European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) is the European Commission's educational programme for Higher Education students, teachers and institutions.
It was introduced in 1987 with the aim of increasing student mobility within the European Community, subsequently the European Economic Area countries, and the Candidate Country of Turkey. Erasmus provides funding for student and teacher mobility, language courses and the European Credit Transfer System. To find out more you can visit the Erasmus website.
The International Exchange Programme
The International Exchange Programme is for those that wish to study at one of our partner universities outside the EU and Erasmus. The programme is run by the Study Abroad Office at the University.
Where can I go?
Where you can go very much depends on the course you are studying. Students studying a language must go to a country where the language of study is spoken. American and Canadian studies students will naturally go to the USA or Canada.
Students not studying a language may be able to choose from other countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore.
You can only choose from a selection of institutions with whom we have a bilateral agreement.
Most agreements are departmental specific so not all students are eligible for all destinations.
If you are interested in finding out about study abroad options for the subject area you are interested in applying for then you should contact the admissions tutor in the relevant department who should be able to advise you on the options available to you.
