The Vale Village


Set in the beautiful surroundings of lakeside parkland, the Vale Village is the University’s largest accommodation site, home to more than 3,500 students in eight residences, including the unique Green Community. The Vale is also home to the Meal Plan which is our version of catered accommodation, which offers you a flexible and convenient eating experience.

A thriving community, the Vale Village hosts a number of popular social events throughout the year including a spectacular fireworks display and Vale Fest, a student-run music, dance and comedy festival.

The Vale's lively community life centres around The Hub, offering catering outlets and social spaces it is a great place for you to hang out with your new friends in one of the bars or restaurants. There is also a well-stocked convenience store, a 24-hour reception and social spaces for you to study or relax in after your lectures.

The Hub

The Hub is located at the heart of The Vale Village and is situated below Shackleton. It provides recreational facilities including bars, restaurants, convenience store, The Vale 24 hour reception and a launderette. The Hub is available and accessible for all students who want a meal, sandwich, coffee or relaxing drink.

Infusion is the main restaurant, whilst The Melt offers coffee and snacks and is home to the Pizza Shack in the evenings. The Hungry Duck, located above the Duck & Scholar student bar, is our take on street food, offering gourmet hot dogs. Meal Plan is accepted at all of these outlets during term time. 

Infusion is open Monday to Friday 4.30pm to 8.00pm and at weekends 9am to 7pm. The Melt is open Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm and transforms into the Pizza Shack in the evenings, from 5pm to 10pm Monday to Friday and at weekends is open from 4pm until midnight. The Hungry Duck is open from 5pm to 10pm Monday to Friday and JC's a table service restaurant is open from 4pm to 9pm Monday to Friday with a late night bar till 10pm.

The Meal Plan is an easy way to pay for food at The Hub with funds held on your University ID card.  Meal Plan is only offered at some of our residences: Aitken, Chamberlain, Elgar, Shackleton and some blocks at Maple Bank.  Meal Plan can be added on to accommodation packages at other sites but it forms part of the whole accommodation offer at the sites listed above and cannot be removed. Please also note that all Meal Plan accommodation includes a kitchen with all your usual appliances so you can also cook your own meals.

Housing 350 students at the heart of the Vale Village community, Shackleton offers mainly cateredShackleton
accommodation through the Meal Plan. Each flat has between two and eight study bedrooms, most of which are en-suite, with a shared kitchen and dining area.

Shackleton also offers 15 self-catered Studio Apartments which provide a more exclusive living option as you will benefit from your own bedroom, kitchen/diner and bathroom.


Chamberlain, our newest accommodation, is home to 702 students and located at the entrance of Chamberlainthe Vale overlooking the lake. Consisting of three low rise blocks and a 20-storey tower Chamberlain provides modern en-suite and catered accommodation with students benefiting from the flexible and convenient  Meal Plan package.

There will also be 24 self-contained studio apartments for those who want a more exclusive living experience.

The ground floor of the new tower accommodates social spaces including a launderette and JC's the University's first waiter service restaurant which is available to all students both on and off the Meal Plan for an evening meal.

Aitken comprises 23 flats offering Meal Plan accommodation on a 42 week contract for a total of 147 students. Each flat is made up of six to eight single study bedrooms with wash basins, shared kitchen/dining rooms, bathrooms and toilets.

Elgar Court

ElgarIf you stay in Elgar Court, you will be joining 236 students in 40  Meal Plan flats. Each flat has either five or six en suite single study-bedrooms plus a shared kitchen and dining area.

Maple Bank

Maple Bank, The ValeSituated at the top of the Vale Village, Maple Bank comprises 87 flats providing accommodation for 435 students offering either self-catering or Meal Plan options. Each flat has five study bedrooms plus a shared kitchen diner, bathroom and toilet facilities.

Tennis Court

Tennis CourtTennis Court currently comprises 137 flats accommodating 694 students in self-catered, shared bathroom accommodation. Each shared flat includes between four and six study bedrooms, a kitchen, lounge, as well as bathroom and toilet facilities. Limited parking is available.  

The Green Community- Centre Court

New for 2016, we are pioneering an exciting living option for students applying to university accommodation. The Green Community is a unique living arrangement available to all undergraduates keen to explore innovative methods of sustainable living within the home and on campus. Students who choose The Green Community will also be given the opportunity to develop their own ideas for initiatives and activities that promote a sustainable lifestyle. You don’t need a degree in recycling to live here; just the desire to learn and the enthusiasm to live in a way that supports the environment. MasonMason is located at the south of the Vale Village. It has 804 self-catered en suite rooms in five or six bed flats and 36 apartments with double beds which are suitable for couples (42 or 50 week contract). Some studio apartments will be made available for Postgraduate students on a 50 week contract. This is a very popular site due to its pleasant views and close location to the campus. No car parking is available.
