Another distinctive part of life at Birmingham is our range of music activities. Our commitment to music began with Sir Edward Elgar, our first Professor of Music.
There is a wealth of musical opportunity at the University and students can get involved in countless types of music at all levels of proficiency. The University choir has more than 200 members and the orchestra has approximately 100 members. They both perform a number of concerts each year at various venues including the Symphony Hall. There are smaller groups and ensembles at the University catering for those interested in either popular or classical music or even performing in musical theatre. The Barber Institute of Fine Arts also hosts a full programme of musical events from visiting artists throughout the year.
