Professional Skills

These linked modules will introduce students to the efficient use of the library and bibliographical sources (including CD-ROM packages and online databases) the importance of good referencing and the dangers of plagiarism as well as the principles of good academic essay writing. Students will also be required to monitor in detail the business performance of a listed company and report their findings orally ( via a presentation) and in written form. A short residential course introduces the importance of good team-working.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of these linked modules the student will be able to: pursue independent study effectively; write up and present the results of their independent study in an academic manner; search the business literature for current information on a particular organisation and prepare a report on an aspect of the organisation; work in groups to allocate tasks and jointly present findings on an organisation

Assessment

Continuous summative assessment consisting of: a 500 word précis of an academic article (10%); an academic essay not exceeding 1,500 words (30%); a company report (30%) and presentation (20%); attendance at short residential course (10%)
