Ashley Kirk, BA English

I chose the University of Birmingham for its amazing blend of social, creative and academic life. It’s got a great balance of being in the UK’s second biggest city and having a campus with its Redbrick setting inspires you when studying here. It’s great to study English at Birmingham, and its team of expert lecturers are helpful in providing support and passing on their knowledge. The resources here are also great: both physical and online libraries are widely available to support my studies.

I study a wide variety of modules, covering different modes, genres and forms of literature from all key eras. It provides not only a breadth of knowledge across the times, but also a depth of knowledge in the major writers and texts we study. Second- and third-year provide a greater scope and much more choice, allowing me the freedom to explore areas of particular interest whilst also maintaining more general, necessary disciplines. I’m a member of BEDSOC (Birmingham English Department Society) who organise regular events, it’s great for meeting up socially with English students and socialising together at events.
