This module will examine themes in the development of modern European political thought: the interpretation of modernity; the nature of reason and rationality; ethics and politics; democracy and totalitarianism.
These themes will be addressed through an examination of the work of the most influential modern European political theorists who have sought to question modern assumptions concerning politics and society.
At the end of the module the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the work of a range of modern political theorists.
- Gain an ability to analyse and evaluate a complex body of ideas.
- 3 hour examination (50%)
- 1 x 4000 word essay (50%)
