Foundations of Modern Political and Social Theory

This module examines modern political theory from the late eighteenth century: Hume, Kant, Burke, Hegel, Bentham, James Mill, Tocqueville. The second part takes the exploration of themes through the nineteenth century: J S Mill, Marx and Nietzsche.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student should be able to demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the central topics, concepts and problems as they are exhibited in the different levels and languages of political thought.
