Modern Political Ideologies

This module will examine in detail the character and development of the most important modern ideologies: liberalism, conservatism and socialism; also feminism, environmentalism, anarchism and nationalism.

It will look at how these ideologies have developed historically, at the social and political changes to which they were responding and to some characteristic debates surrounding them.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to: 

  • Demonstrate an understanding of political ideas from the late eighteenth twentieth centuries. 
  • Gain an ability to think critically about those ideas

  • 3 hour examination 50%
