Healthcare Public Health

Year 2 Semester 2

Credits 20

Healthcare public health is one of the three core domains of specialist public health practice (along with health protection and health improvement). It is concerned with maximising the population benefits of healthcare while meeting the needs of individuals and groups through prioritising available resources, preventing disease, and by improving health-related outcomes through design, access, utilisation and evaluation of effective and efficient healthcare interventions and pathways of care.

The module will introduce you to the commissioning cycle and the three key areas of planning, procuring and monitoring health care services. The module is underpinned by teaching on the critical appraisal of evidence and the use of economic appraisal in health settings. Particular emphasis is placed on health needs assessment, health technology assessment, service design/re-design, quality improvement and assurance, and the evaluation of health services.
