Individual, Cultural and Social Determinants of Health

Year 1 Semester 2

Credits 20

In this module we explore the vital role of lifestyle and social factors in determining our health. The major factors – smoking, physical activity, diet and alcohol – are reviewed in detail. Lifestyle choices will be studied in the social context in which they occur and their impacts examined across the lifecourse (i.e. from birth to death) and in relation to health inequalities. We will introduce the theories of health behaviour and behaviour change as well as a range of interventions to improve health and wellbeing.
