Semester 1

Module description

The module is largely concerned with understanding and applying the principals of sequence stratigraphy – looking at how we can work out what the controls were on how sedimentary basins fill up with sediments. The influences of sea level change and basin subsidence on the architecture of siliciclastic and carbonate sedimentary basin fills are explored with reference to the ExxonMobil methodology. The module is skills focussed and many of the concepts in sequence stratigraphic analysis are learnt about through practical exercises, including topics from identifying sedimentary sequences in geophysical logs to working with core data and seismic sections of sedimentary basin fills.
