Module description

The module covers marine and terrestrial siliciclastic and carbonate sedimentology. Depositional and diagenetic processes are considered for both ancient and modern systems at a range of scales (from field scale to thin section). Controls on the global spatial occurrence of sedimentary systems are investigated as are those on temporal changes throughout Earth history. There is a focus on understanding processes and deposits of modern environments to enable recognition of the resultant products in the sedimentary rock record. Skills in siliciclastic sedimentary core logging, sedimentary facies analysis and carbonate microfacies analysis are developed through the coursework components.
