Module description

The module aims to furnish students with an introduction to modern drama and an overview of the main developments and trends in drama and theatre from the late nineteenth century to the 1960s. Students will study representative texts from European and American drama to gain an understanding of themes and issues that they raise and address and how they relate to culture and society in general. They will also become familiar with the major trends and movements in modern drama, from realism and naturalism to Brechtian 'epic theatre' to the theatre of the absurd. Particular attention will be paid to the development of performance theory and the nature of drama as a genre and its dual functions (as both text and performance).
