Module description

This introductory module (continued in semester 2 by Language for Literature B) supports and develops your knowledge and understanding of the nature of the English language, linking this awareness to your study of literary texts. A principal goal is to provide you with tools for exploring the language in literature. Topics will include: the sound system of English; basic grammatical structure and terminology; and vocabulary and the English lexicon. Where relevant, examples for linguistic analysis will be drawn from the range of literary texts and genres students encounter in other parts of your programme.
