Module description

The lectures for this module provide an introduction to the techniques by which sites may be located, excavated and recorded. In conjunction you will be introduced to environmental archaeology and post-excavation methods. The second part of the module involves three weeks of training in primary data gathering and processing, normally on an archaeological excavation. In addition to gaining practical experience of excavation you will also be introduced to surveying, recording, identifying soils and identifying common archaeological materials. (Equivalent archaeological training in the laboratory will be substituted for students with special needs for whom excavation is inappropriate).
