Other pre-requisites None. This course is taught in English, using English texts, and no prior knowledge of Portugal or Portuguese literature is assumed.

Module description

The course analyses three key novels that appeared towards the end of or after the dictatorship in Portugal and focuses particularly on how political and cultural concerns coincide within these fictions in order to articulate the writers’ vision of, for example, sex and gender issues, the aftermath of the totalitarian regime, or the nation’s disastrous colonial wars in Africa.

Some lecture format presentations from the tutor, but largely student-focussed seminar-based learning style, with extensive use of EBL
