Module description

The module will provide a core introduction to Hispanic literature and will be studied in its entirety by all ex-Prelim. honours students in Year II. A series of lectures taught by a range of members of staff will consider texts belonging to both Spain and Spanish America from the medieval period to the present day, inscribing these canonical works with identifiable thematic or other patterns representative of the broader Hispanic cultural tradition. Accompanying seminar-group classes will identify further short texts as examples of more specific trends within Hispanic cultural history, in the fields not just of literature but of visual arts also, and will lead to the practical application of broad historical and thematic knowledge and interpretative skills fostered by the core lectures. The structure of the module will be defined by genre, drama providing the focus in Semester 1 and narrative in Semester 2.
