Semester 1

Module description

The module will continue and conclude the core introduction to Hispanic literature studied by all post-A level honours students in Year 1, the core lectures on Hispanic verse complementing the earlier focus on drama and narrative. The lectures, taught by a range of members of staff, will consider works of poetry belonging to both Spain and Spanish America from the medieval period to the present day, inscribing these canonical works within identifiable thematic or other patterns representative of the broader Hispanic cultural tradition. Accompanying seminar-group classes will identify further short texts as examples of more specific trends within this aspect of Hispanic cultural history, in the fields not just of literature but of visual arts also, and will lead to the practical application of broad historical and thematic knowledge and interpretative skills fostered by the core lectures.
