Module description

Students will attend weekly seminars and fortnightly back-up seminars. The language of delivery will be either English or French, or a combination of the two, depending on the particular skill being developed in a given week. The Dissertation Francaise is designed principally to develop and assess: Your linguistic skills; Your capacity to write grammatically accurate and syntactically fluent and idiomatic French in a formal register.

  • Your ability to construct a clear, well-planned and rigorous argument, building on techniques acquired through writing English essays and writing French argumentative pieces

  • Your ability to explore a given subject from a range of perspectives (drawing on your general knowledge), generating sound and sharp ideas backed up by material evidence

  • Your ability to show independent analytical thinking, and to apply this skill to a range of literary, philosophical and current affairs topics.
