Module description

This module examines Italian cinema in the new millenium. Although the focus is on cinema, we will also work on the relationship between cinema and television and the internet, as the borders between these media have become increasingly porous. Taking films, and occasionally other media, from contemporary Italy, the module will explore theoretical and analytical approaches, from psychoanalysis to semiotics to cultural studies (postcolonialism, gender, etc.). Students will therefore learn how to analyse films and other media both from technical and theoretical viewpoints, being aware how approaches to the field of cinema differ in Italy and in the UK and US, and how the analysis of cinema is continually evolving.
