Module description

This module is designed to introduce students to qualitative social research approaches and methods using the research process from design to presentation to focus on key theory and concepts underpinning qualitative social research, the design of research using a qualitative approach, sampling, access and ethical issues specific to qualitative approaches, an introduction to data collection using semi structured interviewing, focus groups and qualitative documentary data, exploratory and thematic analysis of data and the presentation of qualitative research both orally and in reports in academic, policy and practice settings. Throughout the module issues of credibility, dependability and transferability and reflexivity will be addressed. During the module students will work in groups on a small piece of data collection and analysis and a short presentation. Computer analysis of qualitative data will be introduced and opportunities for further hands-on experience of packages such as Nvivo will be offered but not required.
