This module sets out the key issues and concepts that pertain to the involvement and engagement of the citizen in contemporary public policy. Ideas of community and citizen engagement are at the top of both central and local government's agendas in key areas of policy primarily modernising local government and the National Strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal. This module examines the role that citizens are being asked to take key stakeholders in the policy making process. The programme of study comprises of two linked 10 credit modules. In the first, theoretical and conceptual ideas are explored which serve to inform the more practically-case study-based work undertaken in Semester 2. Issues that will be covered in the module include conceptions of community and the citizen, citizen engagement in selected policy areas, and analysis of the effectiveness of involvement.
