Module description

This module is divided into two related components: Symmetry and Group Theory and Vibrational Spectroscopy. The Group Theory component of the course discusses aspects relating to symmetry of molecules, assigning Point Groups, assigning a Basis Set, and deriving Irreducible Representations. Additionally, this first component explores how Group Theory can be applied to the construction of molecular orbital diagrams for simple molecules and vibrational spectroscopy (IR and Raman). The latter leads into the second component of the course, which deals with Vibrational spectroscopy [IR and Raman] in more detail. The workshop component of the module reinforces aspects of the lecture course, and for the Group Theory segment a computer-based package is available to support the lecture material.
