Module description

The module includes lectures and project course work on · current environmental issues,· environmental legislation,· environmental mass balances, life cycle analysis, and · sustainability and methods of assessment of sustainability, such as ecological footprint analysis. Current environmental issues include CO2 emissions, greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect, global warming, mineral extraction & finite resources, waste disposal & recycling. An introduction is given to the principles and practice of environmental legislation within the EU. Life cycle analysis follows the principles of: ·· Goal and scope definition (ISO 14041)· Inventory analysis (ISO 14041)· Impact assessment (ISO 14042)· Interpretation (ISO 14043). The concept of sustainable development is discussed and tools for quantitative assessment of our approach to sustainability are introduced, concentrating on ecological footprint analysis. Students are assessed by project work to demonstrate the techniques mentioned and the issues that they raise.
