Module description

This is the first of two linked modules that introduce students to the design process and the skills employed therein. There are three elements to this module, in the first the process of design and constraints that may be faced are examined and students are exposed to the type of open ended problem typically encountered. The importance of considering sustainability and ethics at early stages of the design process is emphasized.
Team working and effective communication are essential elements of a successful design, hence the second element of this module introduces; techniques for effective verbal and written communication, key points for successful team working and provides an introduction to basic drawing and sketching skills.

The final element consists of a practical exercise managed by 3rd year MEng students involving a visit to a construction site. This provides experience of the real world of civil engineering.

Teaching and learning methods

Lecture/demonstrations and active learning sessions (12 h), drawing sessions (16 h), Site visit (2h) design workshops and self study
