Module description

This module introduces the basic concepts of risk assessment in a range of settings using cases studies from past examples of failures from poor risk assessment. Numerical statistical techniques for dealing with environmental risk prediction and simulation within project risk assessment will be applied to the area of nuclear safety. Health and Safety Legislation will also be introduced. Detailed consideration of the understanding of Climate Change will involve statistical analysis of the data available.
By the end of the module the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the general concepts of risk assessment
2. Apply the principles of risk within a number of contexts and with a specific energy focus
3. Analyse a given set of statistical data of extreme events
Demonstrate a critical awareness of the role of the Health and Safety Legislation and its application
