Module description

The Civil Engineering Design Project will take the form of a major piece of design work, generally focussing on a particular aspect of Civil Engineering design but possibly involving elements from other areas. Students will normally work in groups, under the supervision of a team contributing different areas of expertise to the design. Each member of the group will start from the same design brief and will work to a common programme, but will be expected to develop an individual design solution and will be assessed individually. The programme will normally call for a feasibility study and estimate of costs for a range of possible solutions, followed by more detailed treatment of the chosen solution. Where possible, practising engineers will be invited to act as design consultants, to advise individual students or groups of students on areas of common interest. Details of available designs will be published and, as far as possible, students will be assigned on the basis of indicated preferences. However, assignments may be constrained by the number of designs and the supervision available. The Civil Engineering design project is normally undertaken in groups.

Teaching and learning methods
