I graduated with a degree in Philosophy from the University of Birmingham in 2002 and went on to study for a Masters in the subject the following year. In 2005 I qualified as a primary school teacher and continued to work as a teacher in and around the Birmingham area for the next 6 years. My work in education led to a desire to study for a PhD in the Philosophy of Education, and I am currently a Doctoral Researcher in the Department of Philosophy in addition to my role as Student Engagement Facilitator.

Since becoming the Student Engagement Facilitator for Philosophy Theology & Religion, I have been working with key members of staff and students from across both departments to help develop and improve student experience in the school. I am passionate about higher education and my Student Engagement Facilitator role puts me in the privileged position of helping others to make the most of their time at Birmingham by engaging with the wide range of events and activities that the University has to offer.

There is a vibrant atmosphere in the school and there are plenty of opportunities for students to access the scholarly activity and atmosphere of both departments and get involved in cross-department debate. With this in mind, I endeavour to provide opportunities for students across the school to meet and share ideas. Whether this is about their latest assignment, their views on the School or issues relating to their discipline, formal and informal discussion is very much encouraged.

I run weekly office hours for all undergraduate students in the school, who can speak with me about any issues or questions that they have, but I am available by email at any time and students are welcome to drop by my office or catch me at one of the Theology or Philosophy coffee mornings if they have any urgent queries.


  • Planned and hosted events for the University of Birmingham Arts and Science Festival, including a panel discussion on the role of faith in education.
  • Curated an exhibition of photographs entitled ‘What Does a Philosopher Look Like?’ to draw attention to diversity in philosophy.
  • Student trip to recording of the BBC’s ‘The Big Questions’ programme
  • Working with SSC’s to enhance response to student feedback
