Industrial teaching collaboration in Mechanical Engineering

Description
Within the Mechanical Design B module offered to Year 3 Mechanical Engineering students Dr. Mozafar Saadat, Senior Lecturer and module co-ordinator, collaborated with Moog Controls Ltd, part of the global company Moog Aerospace in order to enrich the students' design learning experience by providing an industrially relevant case study and real-life engineering experience.

Formula Student Team from Hefei University of Technology, China visit UBRacing at Birmingham

Description
The University of Birmingham's Formula Student racing team recently hosted the Chinese Formula Student Champions and collaboration partners Hefei University of Technology (HFUT). HFUT were crowned Champions of the Chinese competition in March and were invited to participate in the UK version of Formula Student by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. .

The School of Mechanical Engineering recently took delivery of two brand new, state-of-the-art machine tools from Yamazaki Mazak UK. The provision further strengthens the long established relationship between the University and Mazak, who already provide significant support to UBRacing.

Birmingham at the IMechE Railway Challenge

Description
For the third year in succession the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education have entered a vehicle in the IMechE Railway Challenge. With the only hydrogen-powered engine in the competition, the team had an excellent experience and achieved 3rd place in the competition.

Civil Engineering graduates recognised for excellence in geotechnical engineering

Description
Two graduates from the School of Civil Engineering recently received the high accolade of being shortlisted for the Ground Engineering's Young Geotechnical Engineer award 2014. Janvi Shah was announced as the winner and Chris Shaw was highly commended at a prestigious awards ceremony, which took place in May.

Advanced materials research recognised at international conference

Description
James MacDonald, PhD student in the Advanced Materials and Processing lab, School of Metallurgy and Materials has won the Best Poster Prize at the International Conference on Hot Isostatic Pressing Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, attended by over 170 guests from 21 countries.

Developments in drug discovery and medicinal chemistry
Description
An exciting development this year has been the launch of a new postgraduate taught Masters degree in Drug Discovery and Medicinal Chemistry. This one-year programme includes multidisciplinary modules ranging from chemical synthesis and molecular modelling to pharmacokinetics, toxicology and drug delivery.
